This week we saw a challenge in the workshop that is usually caught and repaired before it gets as out of hand as this one. The cause of the issue? Towing too much weight on the rear of the mower 😬. Although called lawn tractors, the average ride on mower only has a small towing capacity, and the addition of a towball as has been done here tends to indicate more than a yard cart is being dragged around the property.![]()

The small towing capacity is due bouth the the manufacturing process of the chassis to keep the machine affordable (all brands manufacture the chassis similarly) and the Hydrostatic gear boxes that drive most modern mowers. As you can see in our images, thanks of course to our resident crayon expert 🤪, the combination of too much weight on the towball and the torquey operation of the gearbox eventually pulls the transmission out of its housing. The other more uncommon issue seen here is the transmission housing breaking away from the chassis rails. 🤦♂️![]()

Of course with oipen communication with the customer we estimated the cost of repairs and they were happy to go ahead. We were able to rescue the housing and repair the mounts with some fabrication work and the machine was up and going again by within a days work 🥳![]()

This week we saw an uptick in Camshaft replacements in Briggs and Stratton engines and thought it was about time we discussed valve lash again and showed why it is important with the help of the digital crayons 😉. Valve lash is the setting of the engine valves and is an important part of periodical servicing. Mostly because it ensures your engine can operate at its most effcient power output, but also because in engines built for Outdoor Power equipment they have a decompression valve fitted to the camshaft that operates the valves. The valve lash ensures the valves operate with the correct timing, but also ensures the valve train doesn't loosen up too much to allow free play.![]()

What does this mean? Well in the case of the Briggs single cylinder engines the cam follower 'rides' the cam lobe pushing the push rod and opening the valve as it rises. As it gets wears in it can loosen over time allowing the pivot pin that holds the decompression assembly to 'wobble' thus creating metal fatigue and failure. The example we have is a clean failure as our customer was aware there was an issue as soon as they went to start the engine when the starter motor would stop at the compression stroke due to the inoperation of the decompressor, but they can fail far more spectacularly and that isn't always related to valve lash, it can be other factor such as over speeding (expecting the engine to rev harder than it is designed to do), something we can cover next time we see an oversped engine on our benches 🧐🫣![]()

Service was prompt and cost less than the quote. Communication was fast and concise. We were told 1 week for the repairs but the mower was back to us 4 days after we approved the quote. Highly recommended.
They came highly recommended and that information has proven true. I drive more than an hr thru traffic because everyone else is either too lazy or uninterested to do anything more than a minor service or a willingness to work on something that isn't brand new. Fair priced and a knowledgeable crew. They freely give me advice and general direction on issues at hand. My elderly father has bad knees... and needs his ride on mower running reliably and I find this place gives me results... They get it done, no fuss, no gougingread more

Advice and service was outstanding. Thanks very much Phillip. My Fiance came in wanting to investigate the right mower suitable for our property and conditions. Phillips advice was bang on! He had a great knowledge of our current mower (and its performance) and how it would compare to a new larger Zero Turn. Now after a few weeks of using the new ZT54 Cub Cadet mower it has shown that the way... Phillip described the pros and cons are just as he said prior to purchase.This mower has transformed our weekends as it now takes a quarter of the time (not exaggerating) it used to take to mow our property (and it is very enjoyable to use).Other front desk service can do well to follow Phillips lead in the friendly and approachable nature he displays.read more
